The Best Way Out Is Always Through

Do you feel like you are living in the twilight zone?  Everything is the same but completely different? Every day is another day at home?  While our lives have changed and the world holds its breath to see which direction the pandemic is heading, we can often feel frightened or uncertain in our paths forward.

If that’s the way you feel, it’s important to remember that we can still exert some control over our lives. Our circumstances may have changed, but it is our attitudes that determine how we get through this.  If you are feeling low in spirits and need a boost remember these 3 things:

  1. Accept that uncertainty is normal right now and everyone is feeling a level of anxiety about the situation.  Accepting the uncertainty and being grateful for each day helps alleviate fears and gives us courage to move forward.  We can’t change the situation but we can appreciate what we do have. We are fortunate that spring is around the corner and soon  we’ll be spending more time outside, social distancing, but out in the warmer spring air.  We each have things to be grateful for in our lives so when feeling low, try to list the good things in your life.
  2. It’s hard to avoid, but reducing the amount of time you spend watching or listening to news reports, Covid-19 updates and press conferences will relieve your anxiety.  While we need the latest information, watching or listening to it continuously can be damaging.  Do you have a favourite tv show or movie you’ve watched recently that you’d recommend to others?  Let us know in the comments below and we’ll share with everyone.  It helps to escape the day to day with a good movie!
  3. It seems cliche but it is really true; eat well, get as much exercise as you can and try to sleep well. Try to stay in touch with family, neighbours and friends.  We’ve started a telephone tree for members to stay connected.  If you aren’t part of our phone tree, try to reconnect with others via phone or email as much as you can.  Think about people you haven’t been in touch with for awhile and consider reconnecting – this is the perfect time for a catch up call.

Above all, stay positive, together as a community we are strong and soon we will look back on this experience and see it as an opportunity for growth and learning.

Stay strong and remember, the best way through a challenge is just to keep going.
