As we get closer to the holiday season, finding ways to help others, is also a way of helping ourselves. If the holiday season is difficult for anyone missing someone special at this time of year, sharing time with others and getting out in the community to help those less fortunate is a sure way of feeling more connected and positive about the world.
If you’d like some ideas on how to help this holiday season, we have two great opportunities for you to consider.
The first is Food For Life ,which many of us are familiar with from past volunteer food sorting events. Over the holiday season, Food For Life provides holiday meals to more than 12,000 people in the Halton region facing ongoing food security issues.
They’ve chosen next Tuesday November 27th as Giving Turkey Day! You can help purchase a “meal” for individuals and families who otherwise would not be sharing a holiday feast together. Click on this link to make a donation and to learn more about how Food For Life helps the community!
If you prefer to select the turkey you’d like to donate, go to Fortino’s in Oakville or Burlington December 8th or 9th, pick your turkey and hand it over in the store to turkey volunteers from Food For Life. If you’d like to volunteer with Food For Life for their turkey drive, they would really like to hear from you. Email Graham at email@example.com.
* Locations of Fortino’s participating in the Turkey Drive are:
1059 Plains Rd Burlington
5111 New St Burlington
2025 Guelph Ln Burlington
173 Lakeshore Rd W Oakville
2515 Appleby Ln Burlington
493 Dundas St. W Oakville
The second opportunity is with the Salvation Army in Burlington. As described in this article from Inside Halton, the Salvation Army is in desperate need of volunteers to help out with their Christmas Kettle Campaign. This campaign supports many families in Halton with presents, Christmas hampers and food donations, ensuring that everyone has a happy holiday season. If you have a couple of hours to spend as a Christmas Kettle Volunteer at an LCBO, grocery store or Walmart, please contact the Salvation Army as soon as possible at 905-630-5212 or check out their volunteer site here.
